Devin Blake's Journal

Thursday May 20th, 2010

Lecture today was about China’s economy and how quickly it is growing. I found it interesting that there is a mandatory retirement age of 55 for men and 60 for women. I was also surprised how common bribery is to receive quality jobs. We finished the lecture with a documentary with no sound. It showed daily lives of people, a tea house, and an acrobatics show. Apparently much of the video was staged because the government was allowing the video to be released to the world. It was interesting, but a little too long.

We then attended our last company tour to Hanwon. Claudia had to translate the entire time which was a little tedious, but the products that they showed us were awesome. Their writing and scanning technology was very innovative and accurate. They also had a product similar to the Kindle, except it could also be used for much more. You could take notes on it, listen to music and download items from the internet from the device. It will be available to purchase in the U.S. within the next couple months, so it will definitely be something to look out for. That night we went to a cool place called KTV. It is meant for karaoke. The food was not very good because they ran out of everything, but the karaoke was a lot of fun. There was an ok selection of songs to sing, not great, but decent. It was good to see everyone together and enjoying making a fool of themselves.
