STUDENT NAME's Journal

Wednesday turned out to be the most rigorous workout I have had in quite some time. Fragrant “Hill” is false advertising, plain and simple the highest hill in the world. Fragrant Mountain; however, was very nice. It was an actual hike, fortunately paths were lined with trees so the intermittent shade offered reprise from the sun on this 85 degree day. We sprinted up the hill because Ryan (Eagle Scout, ROTC) set a pace that would have been difficult to achieve falling down the hill, nearly impossible up or on both feet. Also, according to Ryan if you take breaks longer than four minutes the lactic acid in your muscles builds up and makes it increasingly difficult. So instead of just going slower we took 60 second breaks. When we reached the top I was so happy to see an air-conditioned building I almost expected it to be an oasis; fortunately, the building did exist and, furthermore, sold ice cream. After being down voted on taking the cable car down we got to go to magnificent restaurant. The restaurant, I believe, was called Peking Duck and it was phenomenal, they had more delicious plates than I could keep track of ranging from duck that melted in your mouth to dough balls literally covered in what I think was molten sugar. Believe it or not the day gets more interesting, after laying down and digesting for an hour or so we went back to the markets that we went to the first day of bargaining. This is where we finally got to try what we had talked about all week. We finally tried the scorpions, they were fried and seasoned and they were actually awesome! After a short break afterwards we went to Tsinghua University and met with students there and talked to them for a while. They were very interesting; I had conversations ranging from my opinions on the Tibetan cessation to the night life around the campus.
