Today started with an interesting lecture by Claudia about the philosophies and thinking of the Chinese people, as well as a brief lecture on their history. It was a very interesting class, although two hours it seemed like nothing. We learned about Confucianism, Daoism, and multiple forms of Buddhism, as well as how all of these tie together to form a ‘folk’ religion practiced by a large number of Chinese to this day. We learned that people don’t have one god and shun others; they are open to all gods and believe all gods have something to offer them as long as they had something to offer the gods. After class we went to the supermarket because I needed a razor and experienced a grocery store quite unlike anything in America. Despite the fluorescent room being physically identical to, apparently, every grocery store in the world, the products themselves were quite unique. We explored for a bit finding everything from meat cubes, to shrimp Pringles, to the most shocking revelation… Lunchables aren’t universal. After this excursion we drove out of the city to what the product manager called the middle of nowhere to see Biocapital: a biochip company with a large global outreach. We toured the facility seeing many of their products, a short video, and their expansive property with a beautiful lake and well kept stone walkway. Although we didn’t get to see many of the things we had hoped for it was a very informative visit.
